CombatCon 2018: August 2nd-5th

Teaching at CombatCon: Where History and Fantasy Meet! in Las Vegas, NV.

CombatCon is many things, but first and foremost, it’s a good time.  The goal is to provide a fun, entertaining, and educational venue for folks who like Western Martial Arts/Historical European Martial Arts in any form, be it practicing them, reading about them in their favorite books, watching them in their favorite shows and movies, seeing them in their favorite comic books, using them in their favorite games, or incorporating them into their favorite costumes and characters.

To that end, CombatCon is a combination of a martial arts convention and a fan convention.  We have something for everyone, from taking part in martial arts classes, to interacting with famous people and super knowledgeable folks in panels, to watching movies, to dancing the night away at our ball.  Bring your costumes if you’d like, but don’t feel compelled to dress up if you don’t want to.  Really, CombatCon is just an excuse to get together with friends and fun people, learn some stuff, talk about some stuff, and have a really good time.

Italian Rapier (Rapier & Dagger) for Screen & Stage

The Rapier was the preferred weapon of the nobility throughout Europe for most of the 16th-17th century. This Long, slender-bladed sword was often carried with a dagger and saw frequent use in the streets as well as on the dueling field. Participants will begin by looking at the elements of rapier that must be carried into staged violence. Time permitting, participants will explore how a character’s understanding of those martial principles allows for great acting choices.

Basic: This introduction will cover the fundamental techniques to give you a solid foundation in Single Rapier.

Advanced: If you have trained Rapier with me in the past then you will work on Rapier & Dagger. After a few exercises to work on the tempo of Rapier & Dagger, you will work on an advanced sequence of choreography.

NYC Intensive for Screen & Stage Combat

June 30th – July 6th, 2018

The need for actors who know how to fight is bigger than ever, so there’s never been a better time to channel your inner fighter and train in screen & stage combat!

This summer workshop is an immersive week with New York Combat for Screen & Stage which has been training actors for nearly two decades. Our goal is to provide a place where actors can hone their craft in creating safe violence for screen and stage. NYCSS focuses on grounding fights in martial reality to make sure the action is highly realistic and an integral part of the story which reveals character.

All stories have conflict. Often that conflict can be expressed in various levels of violence. In fact, violence can often enhance the story being told.

This year there will be 3 ways to participate in the NYC Screen & Stage Combat Summer Intensive.

Milan Italy Stage/Screen Seminar.

This course will be an in-depth study of the combat for stage and screen principles used to enhance the story being told. With a few simple rules it’s easy to take reality and transfer it to stage or screen. An emphasis will be on martial reality creating the foundation of fantastical fights.
We will focus on parries, cuts, evasions, basic terminology and acting the fight before working up choreography with each of the weapons and putting your skills to the test!
